Gahanna once again hosts its Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival for the 25th consecutive year. Performers will swing their way into Gahanna's Creekside district from June 14-16 to celebrate the festival's silver anniversary.

"It started as simply a band or two in a parking lot, not even any stages or anything," said Lori Kappes, the executive director of Visit Gahanna.

Twenty-five years later, the festival has grown into an event with around 25,000 visitors and a robust planning committee making sure everything comes together.

"It's definitely a draw," said Kappes. "Last year, we had representation from 27 different states."

The city of Gahanna and Visit Gahanna have partnered to bring this musical marvel to life, and it's a dream come true for many artists.

"The first time we played in the city was in our basement for like 12 people, and now we're at this festival where there's literally thousands of people," said Jon Lampley, trumpet and sousaphone player for Huntertones, a band which originated in Columbus.

According to Lampley, getting to perform in Gahanna's Creekside District is like a homecoming experience for the Huntertones, who have been wanting to play at the festival for the past few years.

"It just has not lined up with our schedule," said Lampley. "But this year, finally, all of the stars aligned."

Beyond the music, the festival is to have delicious food, alongside unique live artwork experiences from local painters.

According to Kappes, the festival takes pride in featuring a variety of cuisines, without any duplicates. Every vendor is bringing something different to the table. This year's festival features well over a dozen vendors, many of which are local to the Creekside District.

Additionally, for the third year in a row, the festival includes visual arts. This is made possible through a partnership with the Gahanna Area Arts Council, who organize submissions. According to Kappes, this year saw over 60 applications from artists wishing to attend.

These applications are vetted by a jury panel of stakeholders in the community, including the Gahanna Parks and Recreation Department and Visit Gahanna.

"They're going to be all throughout the community this summer, but they get painted at an open-air art studio at the Blues and Jazz Festival," said Rose Hawk, director of Gahanna Area Arts Council's Bright Blocks project.

Gahanna Area Arts Council Board President Christian Peck said he believes the quality and experience of the art are elevated due to the artists being together for their work's conception.

"You get to interact with the artists as they're creating their artwork," said Kappes. "It's really special and it adds a vibrancy to the festival."

On Friday, June 14, Jason Ricci and the Bad Kind performs, followed by headliner Huntertones.

On Saturday, June 15, Mojoflo and Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials perform before headliner Urban Jazz Coalition.

These musicians are complemented throughout the festival by numerous other genre-hopping local performers on the community stage.

In-person tickets are available with single-day tickets costing $20 for adults and $15 for youths, while weekend passes cost $35 for adults and $25 for youths.
