Outside deep pockets spending big $$$ to fight Ohio’s local data center bans
Businesses and industry groups are putting hundreds of thousands of dollars into campaigns over local data center ballot questions across Ohio. Outside groups are funding local data center bans in small Ohio communities to defeat them. Tech companies and trade groups have donated over $400,000 to defeat local ballot measures, according to multiple county campaign finance reports. This figure is almost certainly low. In places like Sunbury, north of Columbus, a non-profit trade association is printing door tags without disclosing its spending. The spending reflects growing resistance to data centers due to concerns about noise, pollution, and loss of farmland. Vantage Data Centers gave $250,000 and four union groups donated another $85,000. In Oregon, near Toledo, opponents raised $335,000 in a city of fewer than 20,000 people.
