NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A man was struck in the face with a glass bottle at the Columbus Circle subway station in Midtown on Wednesday night, police said.

The 44-year-old victim was on a northbound A train at the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station around 10:20 p.m. when he was attacked by a tall man donning a purple hat and yellow pants, cops said.

It’s unclear if there was any interaction between the men before the assailant took a glass bottle and bashed the victim in the head with it.

The suspect fled the scene, while the victim was transported to an area hospital in stable condition with a gash his head.

It’s the latest subway assault to grab headlines in recent weeks, including another attack at the Columbus Circle station last week in which a 19-year-old man was beaten and robbed by 13 people on a northbound D platform.

And on Monday in East Harlem, a man was fatally shoved into an oncoming 4 train—hours before an NYPD officer suffered a nose-breaking punch to the face at the very same station.

This week, the NYPD announced it was deploying 800 officers into the subway system to crack down on fare-evaders as part of “Operation Fare Play.” That initiative comes weeks after Gov. Kathy Hochul deployed 1,000 members from the National Guard and state police agencies to held check riders' bags. They were in addition to 1,000 NYPD officers surged into the system in February to address a transit crime spike.
