COLUMBUS, Neb. (KSNB) - Kearney Catholic boys golf won the Class C state championship Wednesday at Elks Country Club in Columbus. It was the program’s first state title in school history.

A substantial portion of the team’s cumulative success can be attributed to the play of sophomore Jackson Dunham. He shot a combined +5 across 36 holes of play and was named the Class C state individual champion for his efforts. His father, Darrell Dunham, is co-head coach of the program.

“It’s just super special,” Jackson Dunham said. “When we first had the coaching spot open I was begging him to do it. I was like, ‘Dad, you do this with us, we can win a state championship.’ And I’m just so glad we were able to get it done.”

The Stars out-shot Class C state runner-up GICC by 23 strokes. Darrell Dunham said that, while watching his son win the state championship emphasized how special the tournament was, the team title is the cherry on top.

“We thought we knew there was some talented kids coming on board,” Darrell Dunham said. “No idea that Jack was going to end up doing this, this week. It absolutely even makes it more special.”
