Split Columnbus City council advances entrance plaza funding plan - The Republic News

Plans to redirect about $3.2 million in leftover funds toward a redesign of the downtown entrance plaza are moving forward, though not everyone on the Columbus City Council is on board. The Columbus City Council has approved plans to use about $3.2 million in unspent funds from a previous city project to redesign the downtown entrance plaza, the Robert N. Stewart Bridge and safety improvements at Mill Race Tower. However, not all on the council are on board, with Council President Kent Anderson and member Jerone Wood voting against the plan. The remaining $522,509.52 will be used for repainting and preserving the Robert S. Stewart bridge. The funds are available because the project came in under budget and ahead of schedule due to reduced traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project combines the Public Safety Plaza north of State Road 46 and the Robert D. Garton Veterans Plaza slightly to the south into the Robert Garton Plaza. The redesign includes new dedicated monuments for firefighters and police, native planting gardens, amphitheater seating, a flexible community lawn, a picnic grove, and improved pedestrian connectivity.
