Dawn of the dead wood: How to spot zombie trees
Just because your trees have leaves doesn't mean they're alive. Davey Tree arborist Michael Cassidy has detailed how to spot "zombie trees" in your backyard. These trees can be caused by various conditions including root rot, fungi, pathogens, bacteria, and destructive species like the emerald ash borer. Some tree species are more at-risk than others, including Ohio's oak trees susceptible to deadly oak wilt and the destructive Dutch elm disease. Walking around your trees seasonally can notice noticeable differences and take pictures of notable mushrooms. If your trees are becoming strangely abnormal or smelling bad, it might be time to call a tree professional.
