Rochel Kaltmann, event coordinator for Chabad Columbus, returned to Israel for the third time since the war started to once again volunteer at a food truck stationed near the Gaza border from Feb. 26 to March 5.

Joined this time by her sister Simmy, Rochel Kaltmann told the Columbus Jewish News in an email that the food truck is sponsored by Shlomy Ohaion, an Israel Defense Forces veteran who was injured in Lebanon 30 years ago, who now funds the food truck effort on his own. Since Rochel Kaltmann last visited in December 2023, Ohaion has sold “three of his cars to fund feeding soldiers every day, and every day costs him up to $1,000,” she said.

“He wakes up at 4 a.m. to buy the freshest ingredients for the soldiers,” she said in the email.

She and her sister stayed in Be’er Sheva, which is about 40 minutes away from Kibbutz Re’im. The Supernova music festival was held near Kibbutz Re’im. The festival was one of the locations attacked on Oct. 7, 2023, by Hamas as part of a larger invasion into Israel. These attacks spurred the current Swords of Iron campaign in Gaza.

IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari also visited the food truck during her time in Israel, Kaltmann said.

“It was truly inspiring to see Shlomy’s commitment to our IDF soldiers, uplifting them with strength and encouragement as they risk their lives on the front lines,” Kaltmann said. “As explosions were heard in the distance, pita after pita was stuffed and given to hundreds of soldiers.”
