Trump leads in Ohio as Biden loses Black voter support, poll shows

Biden trails the former president by 7% overall in Ohio, according to the new Marist poll. A new Marist poll has found that President Joe Biden is losing Black voter support in Ohio, leading former President Donald Trump to a significant lead in the state. Nearly 50% of respondents indicated they plan to vote for Trump in the November election, while 57% of Black Ohioans pledged their vote to Biden, a significant drop from the 83% the president received in 2020. The survey also revealed that inflation was the top concern for surveyed Black voters, with 31% labeling it as such. The findings indicate a shift in Black voters' attitudes toward Biden, which the president relied on heavily for his 2020 reelection bid.

President Joe Biden is losing Black voter support in Ohio, helping allow former President Donald Trump to gain a sizable lead in the state, according to the results of a new Marist poll.

Biden trails the former president by 7% overall in Ohio, according to the poll. Nearly 50% of respondents indicated they plan to vote for Trump in the November election, while Independent candidate Robert F. Kenned Jr. earned support from 5% of voters.

Among Black Ohioans, 57% pledged their vote to Biden, representing a steep drop from the 83% the president received in 2020. A quarter of Black voters said they will vote for Trump.

Inflation was the top concern for surveyed Black voters, with 31% labeling it as such. When asked which president served them better, Black voters appeared conflicted, with 55% choosing Biden and 42% choosing Trump. The country as a whole is also "better off" under Biden, according to 62% of Black respondents.

The findings indicate a shift in Black voters' attitudes toward Biden, a demographic the president relied on heavily to win in 2020. Singer John Legend suggested on the "Pod Save America" podcast last month Black voters are abandoning Biden due to "misinformation."

Biden's reelection campaign launched its "Black Voters for Biden-Harris" initiative last month. Quentin Fulks, the principal deputy campaign manager, told The Associated Press the campaign will "continue to be aggressive, innovative, and thorough" to earn the support of "the very voters who sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House in 2020."

Trump has also pursued Black voter support recently, including by holding a May rally in the Bronx. He told attendees there "it doesn't matter whether you're Black or brown or white or whatever the hell color you are," adding "we're gonna pull together as Americans.”
