COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Two officers with the Columbus Police Department were recognized for how they protect and serve Fountain City.
Reserve Officer Villanueva and Corporeal Reginal Gordy were recognized Friday morning in the Public Safety building by Columbus Police Department and Piedmont Columbus Regional for their heroic service to a driver with a medical emergency.
Officer Villanueva and Cpl. Gordy were traveling on North Lumpkin Road when a driver having a seizure crossed over onto their side of the road, hitting them head-on. The officials got out of their car and provided first aid to the seizing woman until EMS arrived on-scene.
In an interview with the officers, they told WRBL that their first thought was about their citizens.
“It wasn’t exactly a light bump, so we braced for it,” says Cpl. Gordy. “We probably could have moved to the left or to the right something, but we always think of our citizens. So it’s best that we take the impact of anyone else behind us.“
The officers say they felt little pain but suffered from no major injuries. However, they say their training prepared them for this scene.
When reflecting back on the scene, the officers agree that they wouldn’t have done anything differently.
The officers were presented First Hero Certificates by Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital for their dedication to serving. Piedmont will also display a poster of the two officers in their facilities.
