Creator Ayuka Shichinohe finds inspiration under the sea

Fish Out of Water. Ayuka Shichinohe, a graphic design student at Columbus College of Art and Design, has been inspired by her creation of fish with legs. The character started as a joke in her graphic design class when she thought it was unfair that her pet fish couldn't go on walks. Shichinoshe creates about 430 plushies a year, with prices ranging from $8 to $55. Her Japanese heritage influences her art, particularly her exploration of the relationship between food and art. Since moving to Columbus in 2023, she has explored these ideas through various art installations and street art festivals. She and partner Jay Hubbard are creating a children's book using her fish with limbs characters, set to publish in summer 2027.
