A 24-year-old man was killed in a shooting on the southeast side of Columbus.
It happened near Chatterton Tuesday afternoon, and police need your help in the search for a car they believe was involved.
Columbus police said James Macarrios O'Neal was talking to people inside a dark-colored car when he was shot several times.
One woman told WSYX she heard those shots and screams of panic and ran over to help.
"I heard the gunshots, but I waited because I hear them once in a blue moon. I heard someone screaming, and I listened to see if it was a kid. It was really a cry of agony and anguish," one woman told us. She lives just feet from where the shooting happened.
After hearing piercing screams, she says her adrenaline helped her hop a fence and jump into action.
"There was a young girl screaming and crying, so I hugged her, and she pointed to the ground, and it was a young man, so I checked his pulse. All the kids were coming out and stuff, so someone got me a sheet, and I covered him and stayed until police got there," she explained.
Investigators say O'Neal was talking to people inside a dark-colored car on Chatterton Road Tuesday afternoon.
At one point, someone in that car shot him several times.
Police say the car sped off west towards 270, leaving O'Neal on the ground along Matuka Drive.
It turns out the woman who ran over to help is a former nurse's assistant.
She says it was a knee-jerk reaction to hearing screaming like that, and it's in her nature to help.
"I just heard someone screaming for help, and I knew it had to be bad. I didn't think, oh, what are they doing? I thought, let me go help her. Unfortunately, another life gone too quickly."
This is the 44th homicide in Columbus in 2024.
Police are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting.
Anyone who can help lead police to an arrest is asked to call 911.
