Bad dogs! Columbus in top 10 for mail carrier attacks
It's not just a pop culture stereotype, per USPS data. Columbus, Ohio, has been named the 10th-highest city in the nation for dog attacks on postal workers, according to the U.S. Postal Service. The total of 33 attacks occurred at Columbus addresses in 2023, up from 13th in 2022 and 11th in 2021. Los Angeles topped the list with 65 attacks in 2025, followed by Houston, Chicago, St. Louis, and Cleveland. Dog bites are a significant liability, with the average cost per insurance claim for a dog bite at $64,555. Nationwide, dog attacks increased by about 9%, to 5,800 last year.
