Columbus data centers could pay more under proposed rate hike for high-usage customers

Columbus Water and Power reached it's October 26 deadline to submit a proposed rate structure for high-usage customers. The proposal comes as utility costs rem Columbus Water and Power has submitted a proposed rate structure for high-use customers. The proposal includes a high-demand surcharge for about 400 commercial customers whose water usage spikes above typical levels. Commercial customers using at least 100 hundred cubic feet (CCF) of water per month and meeting a peak-demand factor of 2.0 times their typical usage would qualify for the high-Demand surcharge. The current model generates an estimated $6 million in revenue. However, the proposed surcharge does not guarantee lower household utility bills or prevent future rate increases. If approved, the new charges are expected to begin in late 2027 or early 2028. Water revenue would shift costs away from residential and small business customers, making standard water rates about 1.6% lower than usual.
